Don’t block Obama’s Attorney General nominee to protect torturers.
Some Senate Republicans have already started their quest to obstruct President Obama’s agenda.
President Obama’s nominee for Attorney General, Eric Holder, is eminently qualified - he served as Deputy Attorney General in the Clinton Administration, and was also the first African-American U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
But Senator John Cornyn of Texas has a problem with Holder - the fact that maybe Holder might consider prosecuting Bush Administration officials who illegally tortured Americans and foreigners.
During his confirmation hearing, Holder stated unequivocally that he believes water-boarding is torture. However, when asked if he would prosecute Bush officials who authorized the use of water-boarding and other potentially tortuous practices, Holder declined to give a definite answer one way or the other. Sen. Cornyn sought swift retribution. He has already succeeded in delaying the vote on Holder’s confirmation for a week, and he’s threatened to bury the vote permanently by putting a hold on it.
This is only the beginning. We must show Sen. Cornyn and his right-wing cohorts that they cannot protect Bush administration figures who broke the law. If we don’t stop them now, they will continue to obstruct President Obama’s agenda. Sign this petition today to tell Sen. Cornyn that you are watching him - and expect a fair vote on Holder’s confirmation.
